Braids & Planar Downtempo

/|/|_|_| is definitely my favourite Braids algorithm. Controlling the chaos with the Planar is an absolute delight. Since I got that module, it never left my case and I use it on about 90% of all my patches. The little gate button seems like a trivial feature, but it really is powerful as hell.

Braids & Planar Mayhem

The best moments with a modular synthesizer are those when you can just keep rocking the same patch for hours and keep increasing the volume of your set until somebody starts complaining. That happened to me with this one. The extremely wide range of different sounds coming from Mutable Instruments Braids and the control of that range at my fingertips through the Intellijel Planar really is an awesome feeling.

Sequencer 1 chops up somebody singing

This is a vocal sample that came with the QuBit Nebulae. It gets chopped up by Audio Damage Sequencer 1.

Ring Worm Percussion

Ring modulation really lends itself well for percussive sounds in my opinion. Ring Worm is an alternate instrument for the QuBit Nebulae that incorporates ring modulation between a carrier and a modulator. Super useful for this kind of stuff.

Another important ingrediënt in this patch is the use of ratcheting. This principle is awesomely implemented in the Audio Damage Sequencer 1. When used in some kind of random fashion, I think it really helps to convey a sense of ad lib improvisation.

Funky Sequencer 1

I really dig how a modular synth allows you to move into any musical direction you want on any particular moment. Feel funky? Go do some funky stuff. And get to know a newly acquired sequencer in the process. In this case my Audio Damage Sequencer 1.

Wonky Rhythmic Chords

For some reason the 1V/Oct input on QuBit Nebulae can’t really decide what to make of incoming CV with some alternate instruments. This is also the case with ‘Rhythmic Chords’. You could think of this as a shortcoming, but sometimes you just have to go with what it spits out.

Chanting arabic uScale

Other than the LFO guiding the tempo of the entire patch and some filter cutoffs, I didn’t touch a single control on the modular during the recording of this bit. This allowed me to push my camera back and forth on that slider. 🙂

Bowed drone triple time

The QuBit Nebulae eurorack module allows you to load different instruments that turn it into a completely different module. In this patch I use the alternate instrument ‘bowed drone’ for a melody and progression in triple time.

Beats by Nebulae

QuBit Nebulae is a eurorack module mostly known for granulizing samples and stretching and pitching them. However, there is also a one shot mode in which you can load multiple samples and individually trigger them from the various cv inputs.

In this patch, I used Nebulae in conjunction with Make Noise Rene and various other clock sources to work as a drum machine.
