First collab session with SB-Six

Making music is a lot of fun by yourself, but even more fun when you’re doing it together. SB Six and I decided we should try to do some live jamming from scratch on our modulars. I brought over my little orange case to his place and this is one of the recordings we made. I was really surprised by the result. Didn’t really expect much since we didn’t even know each other at all before this. But for a first jam session this turned out pretty well.

Harmonics Melody

Using the same oscillator output for different signal paths can often lead to interesting results. Sometimes you wouldn’t even imagine that they came from the same source. In this case it may be somewhat obvious. By multiplying the Braids output and using different processing and envelopes on the VCA’s, there’s both slow and distant pad kind of sounds and brighter short percussive sounds.

Braids Geiger Countered

WMD Geiger counter is a one of a kind module. With no effort at all it can absolutely destroy any signal that it is fed. However, it is also quite capable of more subtle treatments of incoming waveforms. In this patch I used a relatively subtle approach while edging towards a harsh noise kind of sound.

Act as if

Nothing beats a a good jungle break every once in a while. In this track I used a single take modular recording as base material for my own jungle track. There’s also a sample of the Dutch ska band Doe Maar. You can find the original modular recording in this post.

Disting Delays Braids

Another favourite Braids algorithm of mine is FOLD, which is used for the lead sequence in this patch. The cool thing about the QuBit RT60 module is that all parameters are CV controllable. I use that to get a super big sound from the kick drum while maintaining clarity on the steps that only the lead sequence is heard.

Tube Driven Sequence

I think that a progression in a track doesn’t necessarily have to come from changes in melody or chords. Synthesizers really enable you to create a different energy or feel using only changes to timbre of the actual sounds. Just the simple subtle tweaking of a filter can make all the difference.

Ring Mod Mayhem

The big advantage of hardware synths over plugins in my opinion is the immediate control it provides. In this patch I use my control modules to the max. I was jamming along for quite a while when I figured I should record this…

Give me a sine

When strapped for inspiration, sometimes it helps to challenge yourself. You could take on a three module challenge. You could also challenge yourself to work with only a single instance of the simplest of wave forms: the sine wave. By mixing all kinds of CV sources and changing the balance of those you can get both percussive sounds and melodic elements from the same oscillator.

Erratic Wavetable Melody

It is not that hard to introduce randomness and chance to patches on a modular synth. The big challenge is to do it in a way so that it maintains some kind of musical quality and not go completely overboard. That can be interesting too, but in this case I wanted to keep a melodic feel to the recording.

Braids & Planar Downtempo

/|/|_|_| is definitely my favourite Braids algorithm. Controlling the chaos with the Planar is an absolute delight. Since I got that module, it never left my case and I use it on about 90% of all my patches. The little gate button seems like a trivial feature, but it really is powerful as hell.
